Mitsui Sumitomo, Amlin to merge reinsurance operations

Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance, which will acquire British insurer Amlin, plans to merge their reinsurance operations as early as fiscal 2016 in hopes of boosting its competitive edge.

The planned acquisition, valued at roughly 3.4 billion pounds ($4.9 billion), was made public in September and has gained approval from regulators and courts in the U.K. and other countries.

Combining their reinsurance operations is expected to elevate Mitsui Sumitomo parent MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings to 15th in the field globally in terms of premium revenue, up from 27th.
